This lithograph belongs to The Bulls of Bordeaux, four large bullfighting scenes Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) created in 1825 while living in exile in France during the final years of his life. Goya, then in his late seventies and nearly deaf, took up the new medium of lithography to revisit a lifelong subject — the drama and danger of the Spanish bullfight — with a loose, bold technique suited to his advancing age and failing eyesight.
