This is Utagawa Hiroshige's Full Moon on Kanazawa, Musashi, part of his 1857 triptych series Eight Views of Kanazawa at Night, now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It shows the autumn moon rising over Kanazawa Bay near Edo, a stretch of coastline whose pine-dotted points and arched bridge had long been celebrated as one of the Eight Views of Kanazawa, a local variation on the classical moon-gazing landscape tradition. Painted in the final year of his career as part of a set exploring snow, moon, and flowers, Hiroshige rendered the night in just a few hushed colors, letting the full moon and a scattering of geese carry the entire sky.
