Giant Sunflower — Antique Botanical Print

Long before it became a garden favorite, Helianthus annuus was domesticated by Indigenous peoples in North America, with evidence of cultivation in the present-day American Southwest and the Mississippian Midsouth reaching back some 4,000 to 5,000 years, possibly even before maize. Early growers selected wild, multi-headed plants for larger seeds and higher oil content, gradually breeding the familiar single giant flower head, and used the seeds for food, oil, and dye across North America before cultivation spread south to the Aztecs in Mexico. Genetic studies point to a single domestication event in central North America, making the sunflower one of the few major food crops to originate north of Mexico.
