This etching, showing a standing philosopher alongside two other enigmatic figures, is part of the Capricci, ten prints Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) etched in the 1740s exploring a private, theatrical world of soldiers, sages and sorcerers. Tiepolo, famed across Europe for his monumental fresco cycles, brought the same dramatic lighting and fluid draftsmanship to these small, mysterious compositions, though their meaning remains deliberately elusive.
