The grapevine (Vitis vinifera) was domesticated in the mountains of Transcaucasia, in the region spanning modern Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, where clay jars holding residue from fermented grape juice date back to the end of the seventh millennium BC. Greek and Roman traders carried the vine throughout the Mediterranean, and it later followed European colonists to the Americas, Africa, and Australia. Nearly every fine wine grape grown today, from Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon, descends from this single species, making the grapevine one of the most consequential plants ever brought under cultivation.
