Great Pagoda Great Bull Front View — Antique Architectural Print

This print shows the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, known to 19th-century travelers as the "Great Pagoda," built by the Chola emperor Rajaraja I between about 1003 and 1010 AD. Its pyramidal vimana rises over 200 feet, capped by a single 80-ton stone, making it one of the tallest temple towers in the world at the time it was built. Facing the sanctum sits the "Great Bull," a monolithic statue of Nandi carved from a single block of granite, added under the later Nayak rulers who governed Thanjavur.
