This plate, titled Actiniae, is drawn from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), a landmark collection of 100 lithographic plates issued in installments between 1899 and 1904. It gathers an array of sea anemones, arranged in the symmetrical, decorative composition that made Haeckel's scientific illustrations so influential on Art Nouveau designers of the era. Each plate was translated from Haeckel's own sketches and watercolors into print by the lithographer Adolf Giltsch, fusing rigorous zoological observation with striking ornamental design.
