Herbaceous Peony — Antique Botanical Print

In Chinese art the peony is called hua wang, “king of flowers,” a title it earned during the Tang dynasty when only the imperial court and aristocracy were permitted to cultivate it and poets celebrated it as “the nation's beauty, heaven's fragrance.” This composition follows the “boneless” (mogu) technique pioneered by painters such as the seventeenth-century master Yun Shouping, who applied colour directly to silk in soft washes rather than outlining each petal in ink first, producing a luminous, almost weightless bloom. Yun came from Piling, in Jiangsu province, a region so associated with flower painting that it gave its name to an entire school of the genre.
