Edgar Degas was fascinated by the popular café-concerts of Paris, informal venues where singers and performers entertained audiences over food and drink, and he depicted both performers and audience with equal interest. "Café-Concert (The Spectators)" turns attention to the crowd itself, using the artificial gaslight and cropped, asymmetrical compositions borrowed from Japanese prints and photography to capture the informal, modern spectacle of Parisian nightlife. These café-concert works are central to Degas's broader project of documenting the entertainments of contemporary Paris.
