Hummingbirds captivated naturalists and the European public alike in the early nineteenth century as astonishing New World curiosities, tiny, iridescent birds capable of hovering in place and flying backward, unlike anything found in the Old World. John James Audubon devoted some of his most celebrated compositions to them, arranging multiple hummingbirds around flowering vines in dynamic poses for The Birds of America (1827-1838), even though the fiercely territorial birds would never actually gather so closely in nature. This print continues that tradition of hummingbird illustration from the golden age of American ornithological art.
