This gum tempera, ink and gold painting, begun around 1558–60 by the Persian master Abd al-Samad, shows falconers hunting within a sweeping Mughal landscape, its borders added later as the sheet was remounted and admired by generations of collectors. Abd al-Samad was one of the two Persian artists who led Emperor Akbar's royal painting workshop, helping found the distinctive Mughal style that fused Persian elegance with Indian color and energy. The painting is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
