Ichikawa Ebijūrō II as Horiguchi Manzaemon Tapestry Blanket

This triptych of color woodblock prints, made in 1829 by Shunshosai Hokuchō, captures kabuki actors Ichikawa Ebijūrō II, Arashi Rikan II, Nakayama Bunshichi III and Asao Gakujurō in character for the play “Eight Views of the Kizu River by Boating Song.” Made during Japan's Edo period, actor prints like this one were a hugely popular genre of ukiyo-e, functioning as collectible theater memorabilia that celebrated the stars and drama of the kabuki stage. The print is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
