This view of the Bacino di San Marco, with the Dogana del Mare and the domed church of Santa Maria della Salute along the waterfront, was painted by an imitator of Francesco Guardi (1712–1793), the Venetian painter whose loose, atmospheric brushwork made this stretch of the lagoon one of the most beloved subjects in view-painting. Guardi's soft, shimmering style was widely copied by followers eager to meet demand for Venetian souvenirs among Grand Tour travelers, and this version carries forward his feel for light on water.
