The Story in the Margin

Honoré Daumier, best known for his lithographic caricatures of Parisian life, made this study of passengers riding the omnibus — the horse-drawn public bus that carried ordinary Parisians through the city from the 1820s onward. Daumier used the omnibus's cramped bench and swaying interior, filled with strangers thrown together, as a recurring stage for observing character, class and the small comedy of city life. This 1864 work is a fine example of the Realist eye Daumier trained on everyday Paris rather than its official ceremonies.
