This print reflects the era's practice of commemorating celebrated writers and thinkers through allegorical imagery, imagining Rousseau's arrival among the classical Champs-Élysées, or Elysian Fields, the mythological resting place of the noble dead. Moreau's elegant, refined draftsmanship and mastery of small-scale figure composition made him one of the defining illustrators of French book art in the decades before the Revolution.
