True jellyfish, the Discomedusae of Haeckel's classification, spend part of their life as a tiny stationary polyp before budding off free-swimming medusae in a process called strobilation — the stage most people picture when they hear the word "jellyfish." The moon jellyfish, Aurelia, is the group's most familiar member, a translucent drifter found in coastal waters worldwide that pulses along ocean currents feeding on plankton. Medusae were among Ernst Haeckel's own scientific specialties, and Discomedusae plates recur throughout his 1899-1904 atlas, Kunstformen der Natur.
