The Story in the Margin
Painted in 1634 and signed by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), this richly dressed woman receiving a cup from a kneeling attendant was long known as “Artemisia” or “Sophonisba” before scholars identified the true subject as Judith at the banquet of Holofernes. Rembrandt, the great storyteller of the Dutch Golden Age, likely used his wife Saskia as the model, dressing her in jewels and gold to capture a moment of quiet resolve before Judith's famous act of courage. The painting hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
