The Story in the Margin
Known internationally as “The Night Watch,” Rembrandt van Rijn's 1642 masterpiece transforms a routine civic militia group portrait into one of the most dramatic paintings in Western art. Rembrandt (1606–1669) used bold contrasts of light and shadow to send the company's captain and lieutenant striding forward out of the canvas, breaking every convention of the stiff, static group portraits typical of the era — the title is actually a misnomer, as the scene takes place in daylight. The painting has been a centerpiece of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam since the 19th century.
