Albrecht Altdorfer's "Landscape with Two Pines," etched around 1522–25, is counted among the very first prints in European art to show pure landscape with no religious or narrative subject at all — remarkable for a moment when nearly all printmaking still served the church or told a story. Altdorfer, primarily a painter, made only nine etchings in his lifetime, working on iron rather than copper plates, which gave his lines a soft, slightly hazy quality; the site he depicted cannot be identified and was likely invented from imagination.
