This plate reproduces one of the most theatrical images from Dr. Robert John Thornton's “Temple of Flora” (London, 1799–1807), a landmark of botanical publishing that set exotic specimens against dramatic, invented landscapes and paired each plate with a scientific description and a specially commissioned poem — this one contributed by Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin. Its subject, the large-flowering sensitive plant, belongs to the mimosa family and was prized above all for its rapidly folding leaves, which recoil within a second of being touched and re-open only minutes later, a defence mechanism that made it a favourite curiosity in eighteenth-century glasshouses. Thornton commissioned the plate to help illustrate the new Linnaean system of plant classification then transforming European botany.
