The lemon (Citrus limon) traces its ancestry to the foothills of the Himalayas in northeastern India, where genetic evidence shows it arose as a natural hybrid of the citron and the bitter orange around 2,500 years ago. Traders carried it west through Persia and the Arab world, and by the second century AD it had reached Rome; centuries later the Arab Agricultural Revolution spread lemon cultivation across the Mediterranean, with Genoa becoming a major growing center by the 15th century. Christopher Columbus brought lemon seeds to the New World on his second voyage in 1493, beginning the citrus groves that would later flourish in California and Florida.
