Signed and dated 1788, "Fire in the Port" is a gouache by the French landscape painter Louis-Gabriel Moreau, known as "Moreau l'Aîné" (the Elder) to distinguish him from his younger brother, the illustrator Jean-Michel Moreau. A pupil of the architectural view painter Pierre-Antoine Demachy, Moreau depicts a dramatic nighttime blaze breaking out at a harbor, a subject that let landscape painters of the period explore the contrast of firelight against a dark sky and water. The work is held today in the Art Institute of Chicago.
