Luna, goddess of the Moon and identified here with Apollo's twin sister Diana, drives her carriage across the night sky, a waxing crescent in hand. Uniquely among the planetary cards, she travels east rather than west, against the Sun's usual course — likely the engraver's way of showing the Moon's real, slow drift eastward relative to the Sun. As the first and closest of the seven classical planets, Luna opens the ascending cosmological sequence that concludes the 50-plate Tarocchi series, an encyclopedic set of engravings made in northern Italy around 1465 to illustrate social rank, learning, virtue, and the heavens. Though long called the 'Mantegna Tarocchi,' the attribution is a popular tradition modern scholars no longer credit, and the engraver's identity remains an open question.
