Mandarin ducks, known in Chinese as yuanyang, are almost always painted in pairs, because the species forms long-lasting bonds and is rarely seen without its mate. Since at least the Tang dynasty, when the poet Lu Zhaolin wrote of lovers envying the happiness of a pair of mandarin ducks, the birds have stood in Chinese art and custom for marital fidelity and devotion, and gifting a pair to newlyweds remains a wedding tradition to this day. Set among flowering branches, the ducks become part of a larger composition wishing the viewer a long and harmonious partnership.
