This kabuki actor portrait was designed by Toshusai Sharaku, the mysterious printmaker whose entire documented career lasted barely ten months in 1794 and 1795. It captures the actor Matsumoto Koshiro IV as Gorobei, a kindly fishmonger who helps two sisters avenge their father's death in the play "Katakiuchi Noriai-banashi" — his pipe raised thoughtfully to his chin, a conventional kabuki gesture for a character deep in calculation.
