Painted around 1602–07 by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), “The Crowning with Thorns” shows Christ's tormentors driving thorns into his head with brutal, matter-of-fact cruelty, one leaning almost bored against a rail as he oversees the scene. Caravaggio, the revolutionary Italian Baroque painter famed for his dramatic use of light and shadow, made the Passion feel like an event witnessed on the street rather than a distant devotional scene. The painting hangs today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
