The Story in the Margin

Scenes of mothers with their children were a favourite subject in Japanese woodblock printmaking, appearing throughout the Edo period in the work of artists such as Kitagawa Utamaro and Suzuki Harunobu. These prints found quiet drama in ordinary domestic moments — nursing, play, the small rituals of care between a mother and her children — treating everyday family tenderness with the same attention ukiyo-e artists gave to courtesans and kabuki stars. This print continues that tradition, observing a mother with her sons in a moment of unposed intimacy.
