This painting, made around 1590, illustrates a folio from the Akbar-nama (Book of Akbar), the official chronicle commissioned by Emperor Akbar to celebrate his father Humayun's reconquest of northern India in 1555. Akbar's royal workshop produced this scene as a symbolic tribute — Humayun, in golden helmet and red tunic, rides triumphantly across the battlefield even though he was not present at this actual battle, underscoring how Mughal manuscript painting blended history with dynastic legend. The page is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
