This engraving is one of the so-called Mantegna Tarocchi, a set of fifty prints made in Ferrara around 1465 — not actually by Mantegna, and not playing cards — that map the whole Renaissance order of the cosmos, from beggars and kings up through the planets and the muses to the liberal arts. Here Music takes her place among the seven liberal arts, ordering the world through harmony.

The whole thing feels thin and rushed. The listing image of Music, Mantegna Tarocchi is noticeably sharper than what turned up here. I had to trim this print to fit a standard frame, which should not be necessary. The description leaves out how much lighter the real thing is.

The subject was exactly what I was hunting for and the reproduction is clean. The smaller elements of Music, Mantegna Tarocchi are clear enough to reward a close look. The detail in the small areas is much better than I expected. I would tell anyone hesitating to go ahead.
