The Story in the Margin

Like other prints drawn from the Story of the Western Chamber (Xixiang Ji), this image illustrates a moment from Wang Shifu's Yuan-dynasty drama of forbidden love between the young scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying, daughter of a chancellor, whose romance unfolds in the seclusion of a monastery garden. Few Chinese stories were reproduced as often or as variously, appearing in illustrated editions, prints, and decorative arts for more than six centuries. This scene captures one more chapter in that long tradition of picturing the West Chamber's most famous lovers.
