This engraved ornament panel is attributed to Nicoletto da Modena, an Italian printmaker active in the early 1500s who, during a trip to Rome, studied the newly excavated grotesque decoration of Nero's Golden House. Its narrow, symmetrical design of mythic figures, armor, and hybrid creatures centers on a caged bird carried aloft on the wings of a winged genius, a pattern sheet meant to be adapted by other craftsmen for furniture and metalwork.
