This is Tōshūsai Sharaku's portrait of the kabuki actor Ōtani Tokuji I in the role of Sodesuke, a loyal manservant who provides comic relief in the 1794 play Hana-ayame Bunroku Soga, staged at Edo's Miyako Theater in the fifth month, when irises bloom. Sharaku, who worked in a burst of activity across less than a year before vanishing from record, was known for compressing an actor's whole character into a single close-cropped expression—here, a clenched fist and determined gaze that read as loyalty and resolve. Only a handful of impressions of this print survive today, held in major museum collections worldwide.
