The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal on Earth, capable of exceeding 200 miles per hour in a hunting stoop as it dives on ducks and other birds in mid-air. John James Audubon painted this dramatic scene of two falcons with fresh waterfowl prey, publishing his Birds of America plate of the species under the name "Great-footed Hawk," while American hunters of the day knew the bird by the vernacular name "Duck Hawk" for its favorite prey, the title still used for this print. Both older names have since given way to "Peregrine Falcon," but the composition remains one of Audubon's most action-packed.
