Plum and Camellia in a Bronze Vase — Antique Botanical Print

Plum blossom and camellia are paired here as two of China's great winter-flowering plants: the plum for its ancient status as one of the Four Gentlemen, blooming on bare wood while snow still lies on the ground, and the camellia, nicknamed the “queen of winter flowers,” for blooming through the cold months when little else survives. This arrangement, cut branches set in a bronze vase, reflects a genre of large, brightly coloured Suzhou woodblock prints made in China during the first half of the 1700s, which brought fashionable bird-and-flower and antiquarian imagery to a broad audience. Pairing auspicious flowers in a vase was itself a popular decorative convention, meant to convey good fortune and refined taste in the home.
