Poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro Tapestry Blanket

This color woodblock print, made by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) in 1835–36, illustrates a classical poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro as part of Hokusai's series One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets Explained by an Old Nurse. Made late in Hokusai's long career, the series paired revered classical Japanese poetry with imaginative visual scenes, offering ordinary readers an accessible way into court poetry that had traditionally been the preserve of the educated elite. The print is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
