Frans Hals painted this portrait of Tieleman Roosterman, a wealthy Haarlem linen and silk merchant, in 1634, when its subject was thirty-six years old. Roosterman may have commissioned it, along with a companion portrait of his wife, to commemorate their 1631 wedding. True to Hals's reputation, the sitter's confident pose and luxurious black costume are rendered with the loose, visible brushwork that set the artist apart from his more polished Dutch contemporaries. The painting is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
