In 1515 Albrecht Dürer carved a woodcut of an Indian rhinoceros he had never seen, working only from a written description and a sketch of a beast newly arrived in Lisbon — the first live rhino in Europe in over a thousand years. Armour-plated and gloriously inaccurate, Dürer's Rhinoceros was so compelling that it shaped how Europeans pictured the animal for the next three centuries.
