This watercolor by the French animal painter Rosa Bonheur relates to her celebrated monumental canvas "The Horse Fair" (1852-55, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art), for which she spent a year and a half sketching at the twice-weekly horse market on Paris's Boulevard de l'Hôpital. Her closely observed horses, with their groomed tails and fine tack, reflect the stock of the era's national breeding stables and her renowned command of equine anatomy.
