Saturn, Mantegna Tarocchi — Antique Celestial Print

Saturn appears here mid-myth, devouring one of his sons in the tale of Cronus, who swallowed his children to escape a prophecy that one would overthrow him — until his wife Rhea hid the infant Jupiter, who later fulfilled it. His scythe points to his older role as Roman god of agriculture, while the coiled dragon at his side casts him as lord of time. As the outermost and slowest of the seven classical planets, Saturn closes the run of planetary cards in the Tarocchi's cosmological climb, just before the fixed stars complete the 50-plate sequence engraved in northern Italy around 1465 across the ranks of society, the Muses, the sciences, and the virtues. The series is traditionally called the 'Mantegna Tarocchi,' though the attribution is a long-standing convention modern scholarship doubts, and the engraver's identity is still unresolved.
