Nudibranchs, or sea slugs, shed their shells as adults and advertise their presence in vivid colour instead — a warning that they carry borrowed weapons. Many species feed on stinging anemones and hydroids, then store the prey's unfired stinging cells in the finger-like projections on their backs for their own defence. Haeckel classified these roughly 3,000 known species under Nudibranchia and gave the order a plate in Kunstformen der Natur, his 1899-1904 celebration of natural ornament.
