Claude Monet painted “Spring Flowers” in 1864, while still in his early twenties and a decade before the first Impressionist exhibition, yet it already shows the close attention to light and texture that would define his later work. Mature peonies, potted hydrangeas, and a basket of lilacs spill across the canvas in an almost scientifically observed arrangement, rendered with an energetic brushwork that captures the play of light across petals and leaves. It remains one of the earliest surviving still lifes by an artist far better known today for water lilies and haystacks.
