Starfish, or sea stars, move and feed using a hydraulic water vascular system that powers hundreds of tiny tube feet lining the underside of each arm. Most remarkable is their capacity for regeneration: many species can regrow a severed arm, and some can rebuild an entire body from just one arm and a fragment of the central disc. Haeckel's plate for the order Asteridea (now Asteroidea) features Asterias, a common sea star genus, rendered with the radial symmetry that made echinoderms a recurring subject in his 1899-1904 atlas, Kunstformen der Natur.
