Painted by the French artist Germain Ribot around 1860 to 1880, this still life gathers a magpie, partridge, jay, and sparrow beside a basket of oysters, as though laid out on a kitchen floor before cooking. Soft light falls across the wicker basket and plumage, a quiet study in texture typical of the still-life tradition Ribot inherited from his father, the genre painter Théodule-Augustin Ribot. The work is held today at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
