Sudden Shower Over Shin Hashi Bridge — Antique Architectural Print

Utagawa Hiroshige's "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake" is widely considered the masterpiece of his 1857 series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." It shows travelers crossing the wooden Shin-Ōhashi bridge over the Sumida River, caught in a sudden downpour rendered through dense diagonal lines of rain, a technically difficult effect to carve into a woodblock. The print was influential far beyond Japan: Vincent van Gogh painted his own oil copy of it in 1887, helping introduce Hiroshige's work to European audiences.
