Maria Sibylla Merian grew up in a family of engravers and publishers in Frankfurt, and later trained her own daughters, Johanna Helena and Dorothea Maria, as artists and collaborators. Dorothea accompanied her to Suriname in 1699, and both daughters, trained by their mother, went on to assist with her publications, including the resulting 1705 work on Surinamese insects. This print reproduces one of those plates, likely pairing a Surinamese insect with the plant it was observed living on.
