Maria Sibylla Merian is now regarded as one of the founders of modern entomology, the first artist-naturalist to systematically depict insects alongside their host plants through every stage of metamorphosis. Her 1705 Suriname publication, the product of a self-funded expedition few of her contemporaries would have attempted, remains a reference still consulted by scientists studying tropical insects today. This plate, taken from that landmark series, likely shows one such insect paired with the plant it depended on.
