Merian's 1699 voyage to Suriname is often described as the first expedition of its kind undertaken purely for scientific study, rather than trade or conquest, and remarkably it was organized and led by a woman traveling with only her younger daughter for company. She had planned to stay for years but returned to Amsterdam in 1701 after contracting an illness, possibly malaria, bringing back sketches, pressed plants, and preserved insects. This plate comes from the publication that resulted, likely pairing a Surinamese insect with the plant she observed it on.
