Merian's Suriname plates documented tropical food plants alongside the insects that fed on or lived among them, including cassava, shown in one plate together with the life cycle of a sphinx moth and a tree boa. Elsewhere in the series she recorded pineapple and guava, among other plants central to life in the Dutch colony. This print, from the same 1705 publication, likely shows another such pairing of a Surinamese plant and insect.
