During her two years in Suriname, Maria Sibylla Merian relied on knowledge shared by the colony's Indigenous and enslaved inhabitants, who pointed her toward specimens and explained local plants' uses, information she recorded in her published notes even though she rarely credited individuals by name. That collaboration, largely uncredited at the time, is now recognized as part of how she assembled such an accurate record of Surinamese insect life. This plate, from the resulting 1705 series, likely pairs one of those insects with its host plant.

This is the second thing I have bought here and both have been good. The scan behind Surinam Insects and Plants is clean, with no obvious artifacts. The paper on this print took a frame without any trimming. It has been a pleasure to have around. 😍
The quality here is well beyond what I paid for it. Everything that makes Surinam Insects and Plants special survived the reproduction.
It looks better in some light than in others. The scan holds up until you get closer than three feet. The listing description is accurate and a little generous. It fills the space and that is the whole story.
The quality here is well beyond what I paid for it. The scale works perfectly for Surinam Insects and Plants and nothing feels cramped.
This is my fourth order from this shop and the standard has not slipped once. It brings out parts of Surinam Insects and Plants I have never seen reproduced this well. I am thrilled with the whole experience.
