Maria Sibylla Merian's Suriname studies went on to shape modern science: Carl Linnaeus drew on her illustrations to help classify more than a hundred species in his 1735 Systema Naturae, and Germany later honored her by placing her portrait on the 500 Deutsche Mark banknote. Several species, including a butterfly and an orchid bee, have since been named in her honor. This print reproduces a plate from the 1705 publication that made that legacy possible, likely showing an insect alongside its host plant.
